Ok, I promised you a three-step formula, but what you might not realise is I’ve already given it to you.
Did you notice it?
It’s cool if you didn’t, because I’m going to spell it out for you right now.
The first key to list building is your TOPIC selection.
You need a HOT TOPIC to HOOK your audience.
It has to be something they are genuinely interested in knowing.
This means understanding WHAT they are LOOKING for.
In the case of this post, the HOOK was – LIST BUILDING.
One of the BIGGEST mistakes people make with their list building efforts is they choose a topic they want to PROMOTE, not one their prospective audience is looking for.
If you’ve nailed the topic and created a compelling HOOK, the eye balls will follow.
Now it’s a case of holding on to that attention.
You have LITERALLY only seconds to capture the attention of your prospect.
That means you need to cut to the chase – FAST.
The prospect is asking themselves one question:
“What am I going to get out of this?”
This is what’s commonly referred to as the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me).
Your second step then, is to frame the OUTCOME.
It’s essential that the promise of an OUTCOME is articulated quickly and upfront, and not buried deep in your content.
It doesn’t matter what format the content is taking, whether it’s a blog like this one, a video, or podcast, you need to state an OUTCOME from the outset.
If you don’t, you RISK the prospect leaving as quickly as they arrived.
In this post the OUTCOME was stated in the second line:
‘I’m going to walk you through a simple 3-step process that’s going to have prospects clambering to connect with you’.
If this was the first time I mentioned that promise, chances are you would never have seen it, because you would have stopped reading long ago.
The common mistake people make is instead of sharing the outcome, they start telling the prospect WHY they need to listen.
The fact is, if someone has searched for an answer to a question, they already know WHY they want it, so you telling them is a waste of time.
What they want to know is HOW and WHAT to do.
Finally, the third step is evidencing the Hook and Outcome.
This is done in the form of a TESTIMONIAL.
You could use a customer testimonial if you like, or as I did in this example, use a more generic TESTIMONIAL style statement.
‘Best of all I’ve taught this system to thousands of entrepreneurs and it’s never failed to produce incredible results’.
The bottom line is, people like to know that they are learning something of substance that has produced a result for other people just like them.
Because I have a long history in my field (15 years) of helping transform small businesses, I have a lot of evidence of the results clients have produced and a lot of credibility with my readers.
Your TESTIMONIAL statement needs to reinforce that other people, (people just like the prospect consuming your content) have experienced a positive outcome from following your advice.
The mistake to avoid is dropping into convincing mode at this point, where you are trying to talk the person into why they should listen to you.
The fact is, the prospect doesn’t care about who you are; they only care about getting the info they know they want and need, so make sure you don’t get in the way of that by banging on about yourself.
So, there you have it.
A simple, but incredibly powerful and effective 3-step strategy that will help you dramatically increase your LIST BUILDING potential.
Step 1: The HOOK – A compelling title that’s of interest to your target market.
Step 2: The OUTCOME – spell out the promise of what the prospect will learn.
Step 3: The TESTIMONIAL – evidence that what you’re about to share delivers results.
